What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy massage is a pleasant form of treatment, using essential oils which are extracted from aromatic plants, woods, fruits and resins to help improve some of the health problems from which we all suffer from time to time. The essential oils are considered to work both on a physical and psychological level, so an aromatherapy massage may help alleviate stress, tension, muscular aches and pains and many other problems from which you may be suffering.

The art of massage with pleasant smelling oils extracted from plants is very old. As far back as the ancient Egyptians and before there is evidence of aromatic plants being used to improve health and well being.

About Essential Oils

Essential oils are extracted from herbaceous and aromatic plants, woods, leaves, resins and flowers. Well known oil of lavender is distilled from flowers and leaves. Cedar wood oil from the wood of cedars. Thyme oil from the herb, exotic essential oil of jasmine from the flowers and the fragrant essential oil of rose is made from millions of rose petals.

The role of these naturally occurring plant oils is many, one of which is to protect the plants from disease. Most essential oils have an antiseptic quality and many are also anti-bacterial and anti viral. Another of their roles in nature is to protect the plant from heat and cold so some oils may be added to a blend to warm the body and another type would be used where a cooling process is needed, for example, where there is heat and inflammation in the body. Different oils would be used to have a calming effect on the mind and body and yet another type when a stimulating effect is needed, perhaps when studying or other occasions when a lot of mental energy is required.

How Essential Oils Work

When used in an aromatherapy massage a blend of essential oils, chosen to suit a specific need, will be added to a base massage oil such as grapeseed or almond oil and massaged in to the body. The oils will pass through the pores of the skin, into the blood and so circulate around the body ending up in the areas which need help.

The aroma of the oils will also enter the body through the olfactory organ in the nose going on to stimulate the brain to influence different areas of the body. The influence can, of course, be invigorating, or calming as is needed at the time.

Some conditions which may be helped:

Tension, stress, some digestive disorders, respiratory problems, PMT, menstrual problems, menopausal, stiff aching joints and muscles to name just a few.

When you first come for an aromatherapy treatment a full case history will be taken to give the therapist a whole picture of that person. With this holistic view in mind, a blend of essential oils will be made to suit that particular person's requirement at that time and a style or blends of massage used to suit the special problems of that patient.
